Hack hunkered down to watch the only doors he could see - a set of double doors to the left of the altar - whilst the others set to to investigate the room.

Jemma was concentrating so much on weaponry that pretty well all she could find was...weaponry!

Each of the guards had a shotgun and a long knife/short sword.  She managed to scavenge 22 shotgun shells and a handful of thrones (12).

Quilliam started with the gun servitor and soon realised he could, with a little difficulty, disconnect the autogun complex.  It was pretty much the same as a normal autogun but had an expanded magazine holding 100 rounds instead of the normal 30.  There were about 80 remaining.
Spoiler: show
[Stats otherwise as autogun but 100 round clip and 2kg heavier]

That done he tried to take apart some of the wiring and connectors for later use but after several false starts he realised it was beyond his capability.

Raltus started his search with the dead cleric at the altar.  There was a book clutched firmly in the dead mans left hand but as he moved to take it he stopped and examined the body instead.

His first thought, that the cleric had been killed by the gunfire from the lander, was soon proven wrong.  The man had died from having his throat slit, ear to ear!

In fact there were several strange things about the scene.  The cleric’s right hand and arm were covered in recent looking leprous scabs and abrasions, all the way to his elbow although the rest of his body seemed  clear of the affliction.  Also the feathers!  He could see no reason at all why there should be hundreds of small black feathers surrounding the body of the dead man.

Raltus was again just about to take the book when something about the scene caused him to pause.  There was something odd but he just couldn’t put his finger on it.  Perhaps a fresh pair of eyes would solve the problem...

Quilliam steps up beside Raltus, adjusting his new auto gun on his shoulder strap. "What's this? He got anything good? Oh..." He kneels down to inspect the corpse. "Doesn't look like a man could do this to himself. And there's no knife I can see. What are all these feathers? Some xenos do this to him you think?" He has a look at the diseased arm but is careful not touch it. "Wages of heresy maybe? Doesn't look like he spent much time in a chem sump to get such lumps. Been shaking hands with daemons to get a manky arm like that most like. Or doing something even less pleasant to 'em I don't want to speculate on."

"Oh!" Raltus starts, hand dropping back to his side just a little too fast. "Quilliam! Didn't see you there. What a large rifle!" He smiles, weakly. "Er - quite. Wages of sin. Or of martyrdom, ha-ha. Note, slit throat - could be ritual murder. Or similar."

He smiles again, and starts rummaging in his backpack. "I want to make a record - leprous scabs to the elbow - not seen that before," he mutters. Any excuse to regather his thoughts. "If only we had a medic we could check for bruising."

Pulling out a pencil, he licks the tip before applying it to a reporter's pad. "Leprous," he murmurs. Frowning, he looks up, ritual of the experiment taking over. "You've seen bodies before, Quilliam. Something seem odd about it to you too?" He chews the top of the pencil. "Is all this blood from the neck, or are the bolter wounds hiding something from us?"

Spoiler: show
And test vs relevant Forbidden Knowledge skills (Cults, Heresy and Daemonology) to see if anything here looks familiar from the forbidden experiments back at Scholam

Quilliam shrugs. "On Volg scabs just mean you're still alive. I've no special talent discerning what they mean."

Raltus felt a shiver run down his back as he suddenly realised he recognised the scabs.  Well, maybe not these scabs but something very similar from his time at the Schola.

“Doctor...Doctor Hemminghoff...” he started, “at the Schola...he got scabs very sim...similar to these when he handled...”

He took a deep breath and steadied himself before continuing.

“There was a pair of gauntlets, supposedly from some kind of demon-tainted thing or person.  The stupid bastard actually put one of them on.  He screamed...I’ve never heard anything so horrid before or since...and when he managed to pull off the glove his hand was just like that.  There was nothing the physicians could do except amputate.  He was never the same again.”

Quilliam stared at the scabbed hand in fascination and even Jemma came over to look.

“Hurry up over there” called Hack.  “I’m getting bored.

But Raltus had turned his attention to the book.  Although it looked just like a standard book on the Imperial Creed he was very careful in picking it up.  A glance inside was enough to tell him it had been heavily annotated.  Even without taking time to examine it closely it looked very heretical.

“Come on” said Jemma, “before Hack starts shooting up the place.”

But as she stood, her eye was attracted to a strange detail. The blood on the altar was spread over a wide area but in one place, at the right hand edge it stopped suddenly!

In fact it looked very much as if there was a crack - a straight edged crack - which ran the length of the edge of the altar.

“Hang on!  What do you think this is?  It looks like the edge of a door or something.”

Spoiler: show
Two very good rolls here.  Raltus on Forbidden Lore, Daemonology and Jemma on Awareness.

Hack's shout cuts off Raltus' muttering. He glances round, guiltily. "Be with you shortly, Hack!" Please Emperor no-one heard my mumblings...

Picking up the book, he flicks through the pages quickly. "Spell-book, probably," he declares. "I'll take it with us for further inspection." He smiles at Hack. "No point in holding us up any longer, eh?"

"Bolthole for scrofulous heretics I'd wager." Quilliam looks about for soldiers. "Best get it over with then. Think this is a job for the meat hammer." He unships his massive home made shot cannon and then starts trying to pry up the door with his knife. "Do you think there's a secret handle for this secret door?"

Quilliam's knife slipped easily into the crack.  As he ran it from side to side he felt a blockage of some kind almost exactly in the middle of the long edge.  The whole thing reminded him of something from before, something several years ago although the memory just would not come.

He pressed down hard on the hilt of the knife, levering the point upwards, and he felt rather than heard, a soft click.

Then the memory returned!

"Back!  Quickly!"

He and his companions were just in time.  The trapdoor jerked upwards a centimetre or two and a gush of rancid smelling gas belched forth in a small cloud.  Jemma had sprung back far enough to be out of the cloud, as had Quilliam but Raltus caught just the very edge and erupted into a bout of coughing and spluttering which lasted several seconds.  The gas left several nasty looking burns on his face and neck but fortunately he was just far enough away to escape the worst of the blast (3W)

The gas disipated quickly as the door continued to rise revealing a metre-square opening with steps descending into darkness.

After a moment or two there was a flickering as the vault lighting system stuttered into life.  Not much could be seen from up above but it looked as though the area contained cupboards, bookshelves and glass-topped display cabinets.

Spoiler: show
(Sorry about that.  Accidentally clicked post instead of Preview.)

"Stupid stupid stupid, says Quilliam. "Should have got one of you to go first." He hefts his shotgun and advances into the tunnel, heedless of Raltus' injuries.

Quilliam only moved a couple of steps before halting.

The Mother Lode!

The room was quite small but seemingly full of cabinets and display cases.  Even a cursory look revealed the treasures that might be lurking here.  There a beautifully crafted long las, there what looked like an antique bolt pistol, several book shelves held a surprisingly small collection of leather bound books.

Now what was a man to do.  Grab everything he could or get his companions in on the act?

"You did," coughs Raltus. Wiping the fizzing spittle from his lips, he clambers down the hole after Quilliam, coming to a stop at the sight of the treasures.

"By the - !" He shakes his head. "A cache indeed."

He glances over his shoulder at the others.

"Take what you can carry! We cannot spare any man to guard it. We take what looks most useful," he reasons, "then seal the door as best we can and pray no malingerer finds it in our absence."

"By useful," he hastens to add, "I meant for our master's investigation. Obviously."

Qulliam's eye light up at the sight of so much hardware all for the taking... he reaches out his yellowed fingers but Raltus barges past. He snatches his hands back like they have been whipped. "Yes... we should turn the weapons of the enemy to the Emperor's use. But first see they are not trapped or tainted. Speaking of which..." he approaches the books and gives them a quick look through, careful not to look too deeply in case his brain turns inside out. "Unlikely to be nudey pamphlets..." He grabs them and puts them in his satchel once they have had the once over.
