Dark is the Moon / Re: Episode XII: Dawn...but Not Forgotten, Scene 12

"Showy, isn't it?" Darian laughs lightly.  "Won't do much, but it will protect us from the elements and provide a little warmth and comfort while obscuring our activities to anyone or anything that might happen by."

He helps set up camp before taking up post, sitting up on his bedroll and peering out of the dome and listening intently to their surroundings.  Although his watch passes, he knows he won't get much sleep tonight.  He hasn't known Belk for long, but is fairly sure the man means no harm.  To him or Gaellen, at least.  River, on the other hand...he couldn't put a finger on.  Best to keep an eye open, just in case.

As they pull their horses off the pathway, Darian centers himself on the location of their would-be campsite and holds both hands up, directly above him.  As a light blue energy surrounds his open palms, he spreads his hands slowly apart while keeping his arms fully extended.

The energy jolts between his hands and a large, transparent dome with a slightly blue-ish tint surrounds him, twenty feet from one side to the other.  Inside, the air pressure changes slightly, the temperature becomes a cozy seventy degrees, and any wind and dust blowing around from outside is no longer felt.

Anyone, or anything, on the outside, instead sees a darkly colored, opaque dome.

"There," the bard says with a smile as he starts to set down his things and lay out his bedroll.  "Nothing can see in, but we can see out.  Probably best to take watches - I'll volunteer for the first, if nobody fights me for it."

Darian feels the growing sense of unease as they proceed further into the ruins of the crumbled and ancient city.  "I don't like the feeling I get here," he says quietly to those around him.  He notes the look in Gaellen's eyes, telling Darian that the boy shares his sentiments.  "Nevertheless, our horses are likely to break their legs going through here in the dark."

"River," he calls ahead to their guide, "Any idea how much farther we have to until our destination?  We should start looking for a place to set up camp for the night.  Even if its out in the open more than we would like, I can at least provide us shelter."

He begins looking around himself, looking for a place that is at least out of immediate line of sight of the path they are travelling.

"Belk has the right of it, Master Gaellen," Darian states bluntly.  He didn't much like the idea of stepping foot into a place filled with undead denizens, but what else was there to do at this point?  Nothing - they've already come so far, after all.  He takes the reins and pushes his seemingly reluctant steed forward, closer to the ruins.  "We ride in, and hopeful out again."  As they approach, he continues to scan their surroundings, carefully watching for any signs of hostile presence.

"Huh," Darian responds, broken from his moment of awe in looking at the ruins. "Not much, Master Belk.  Dwarven ruins, I believe - I feel like I should be able to place this but I can't..." His eyes go distant as he takes in the scene around him and tries to remember anything he may have heard about the view before them.

'Tragic', Darian thinks.  "Well, River, maybe we'll find a way to bring your memories back to you.  If nothing here has sparked your memory, something out there could."  He nods to the masked man and his other companions.  "I'm ready when you folks are."

Cheers to you all and Happy Holidays!

If posts have a tone of voice, I'd say you sound a lot better, Frost - I hope your recovery continues expeditiously and that it doesn't get in the way of you enjoying the holidays :D

With a smile, Darian looks to the masked man.  "We'd be happy to have you along, River.  Any help we can get, of course, is welcome.  Do you know the area?  With the exception of Gaellen, here, we're strangers to this land."

"Ahh, yes," Darian says with a smile at River.  "Specifically, I search for my friends Tariz and Zelariel.  You'd know if you saw them, I should think - Tariz has bright, red hair.  Zelariel is an elf, he goes by Fade.  They travel with several others, we've been told, in defense of Falcon's Hollow and this region."

A pang of sadness reaches Darian's heart.  Careful to avoid unnecessary lies, he replies, "This will work well.  Your wife would be proud to protect you and yours, even in death."  He takes the locket from Berekland and leaves to find a quiet place to perform his 'incantation' out of sight and earshot of the innkeeper and his family.

After several minutes, he returns without the locket.  "The locket has been placed under the floorboard in the room back there," he gestures from whence he just came, "So long as it isn't discovered, the charm will function as expected."

He looks around to see if River Woods has saddled and readied the horses, ready to leave at their earliest convenience.

Darian will cast prestidigitation on the locket to make it warm to the touch and give off a soft glow.

As the mute, leather-masked individual acknowledges Berekland's request, Darian adds, "Thank you, River Woods.  And you, Master Berekland.  While the provisions are being made ready, I could use someplace dark and quiet to prepare the protection spell.  And an object, something that holds significance for your family and your home - it will act as a ward, of sorts."
