Torg - The Possibility Wars
« on: October 15, 2016, 03:43:37 PM »

When a group of Storm Knights are contacted by a wealthy Texas oil tycoon, the job seemed uncomplicated: rescue his errant son -- the black sheep of the family -- from the Living Land realm now occupying western Pennsylvania, his last known location. But will they succeed when they learn this do-nothing son has gotten himself involved in a plan that may shape the outcome of the Possibility Wars?

The Setting
Torg is a game about heroes in the near now fighting a war against alien realities invading ours.  Each ruled by a god-like High Lord, these invading realities (called "cosms") have each claimed a piece of the globe as their own realm, in which that High Lord's reality reigns.  The British Isles and Scandinavia have been invaded by the fantasy reality of Aysle; a Cyberpope rules France from the God-Net; the villainous Dr. Mobius has brought his pulp-powered reality to Egypt and the Middle-East; realms of horror occupy Indonesia and Australia; while dinosaurs and lizard-men roam the continental U.S.

The Heroes
Heroes are called Storm Knights, because they can store and manipulate possibility energy and resist being affected by foreign realities.  Storm Knights can be natives of any invading reality, or be from core earth.  A party in Torg can thus comprise any sort of individual: wizards, paladins, ninjas, werewolves, cyberdeckers, truck drivers, Catholic priests, street gang members, lizard men, etc.  Action tends to be "cinematic," in that Core Earth is less like our "real world" and more like the world of the Fast and Furious franchise or a Jason Statham movie.

The Game and Players
No experience with Torg is necessary to play, and you don't even need to own the game (it is available in PDF form on drivethrurpg.com if you are interested).  This is a game from the 1990s after all. It does have a card-based mechanic that I am going to try to use in this pbp format, so we'll see how that goes.

I'm looking for 3-5 players interested in a game with a somewhat casual post-rate: about 3-4 posts per week.  I'm most likely to be posting in the late evenings and on weekends (on Eastern U.S. time or GMT-4).

Character generation is mainly template-based: I'll be providing a host of templates that can be customized (mainly adding skill adds).  Fun custom concept ideas welcome for those familiar with the game and system.   I own just about all of the worldbooks, so I am open to pretty much whatever.  That said, I'll probably direct the stink-eye in the direction of any Ravagons or Techno-Demons.

Finally, it'll be up to you all to figure out your relationships to one another, so keep that in mind.  Post interest below and thanks for reading!

I'm interested. Although I'm also a bit confused. What would our Storm Knights be doing, exactly? Suppressing the natives for our High Lord? Fighting the forces of the High Lord on behalf of the natives? Working as freelance mercenaries for whoever paid best? Defenders of a neutral zone - perhaps in the balmy Caribbean - where refugees from a wide variety of origins have decided, "Enough with all this! Can't we just all get along?!"(e.g. sort of like the plot of T.V. show/game Defiance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defiance_(TV_series))?

[Personally, I vote for my last option.]

See the first paragraph of my post. That's the premise for the first scenario. After that, I'm open. :)

It sounds - on the face of it - as if the PCs would start as freelance mercenaries.

But the "wealthy oil baron" [WOB] could be a collaborator with the invading High Lord and have asked His Majesty to borrow a unit of loyal Storm Knights  (e.g. the PCs) to retrieve his errant offspring.

OR the WOB could be a ranking member of the resistance to the invading High Lord and dispatching a resistance unit (e.g. the PCs again) on a personal mission.

OR the WOB could be looking to do business with the neutral enclave - perhaps drill offshore in their territory - and part of his price is the retrieval of said errant offspring.

From the teaser about possibly ending the Wars, I suspect that the allegiance of the PCs might matter to the story line.

In Torg, PCs are resisting the invading High Lords, who are almost without exception dastardly villains. The term "Storm Knights" just refers to any individual capable of storing and manipulating Possibility energy, so they can be from numerous walks of life and from any cosm or invading reality. So however they make a living or whatever their personal mission, the assumption is that the PCs are heroes working against the invading High Lords.

Take a look at the Torg introductory pack (it is Pay What You Want) http://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/28828

A Google search will also reveal a ton of results about the game, including sample character templates.

I'm interested! I have played TORG a few times, and have a Core Earth martial arts specialist in mind. I had started her with a campaign that fell apart. Le me know if that's okay!

Looked over the TORG Introductory pack and it looks quite interesting.

I'd like to participate if there's still a slot open.

Didn't get much of a response initially, but if folks are still interested, sound off and let me know.

I've been sick- so first time back... still interested.
You going to provide the templates to chose from or do we need to.

I fell off the face of the planet, I think. Sorry for the very late reply! I'd love to get into some RP, but not feeling the TORG just now. Perhaps a future date!
