Keeping his eyes trained on the treeline, Hugo's attention was suddenly diverted at the sound of a thud coming from within the smoke.  Whirling his head around just in time to hear Hood call out to open fire, he curses under his breath.  Spinning the rest of his body around, he tries to take aim into the smoke, but only makes out the the silhouettes of a few people.  "No clear shot" he calls out and takes aim at the smoke cloud, taking a few steps back to give that extra space should there be a sudden eruption from the smoke

[Bobitron]

The instant torque of the Venator's four galvanic motors send the vehicle leaping backward, breaking free of the confined interior of the Huts and out to the road. Sawyer glances across and sees part of the area engulfed in thick smoke, with part of the squad arrayed around the outer edge of the huts seeking targets. Zurk is closest to the smoke on Sawyer's right, his lasgun held tightly at the ready. Val watches from his left, having switched from grenade launcher to shotgun.

Hood hears Mara click her comms in an affirmative. She fires a split second before the sergeant, twin blasts searing into the scrambling form. The target collapses to the ground hard, an unmoving lump. The second shape surges past Hood at Mara, slamming into her and sending the trooper spinning. She manages to keep her footing as the runner bursts free of the smoke directly in front of Zurk, who fires a quick shot as he steps aside to avoid the onrush. He hits the target dead center. The young woman collapses to the ground. Clad in worn black pajamas, her hair splayed out in the dirt, she lies still.

Val hears a noise from her left, something moving in the treeline. She glances over just in time to see a man charging from the bush, his face a twisted rictus of rage, a heavy chopping blade in his raised hand.

[Padre]

His heart now racing, Zurk doesn't take his eyes off the downed woman.  "Sola, cover the smoke for any more of them" he calls over his shoulder before giving the limp body a nudge with his boot, he las trained center mass on the target should she make any sudden moves.

[Colonel Blood]

"Back me up here," says Hood to Mara as he goes to check the downed Vetnan for life signs. He moves around to the other side of the body before rolling it, to give Mara a clear shot if the wounded person tries anything funny.

[Bobitron]

Sawyer, mouth agape, croaks out a warning. Cort swings the multilaser left, actuators smoothly swinging 150kg of weight with ease. But Val is blocking a clean shot. With a dozen shots of las fire screaming from the barrels, the risk is too great.

Machete held high, the man launches himself at Val in a rage. His swing takes her by surprise, skittering down her armor and leaving a long, ugly scratch on her left forearm (3w).

Mara steps right a meter to ensure an open line of fire as Hood checks the body. The middle aged man is indeed dead, with a pencil thick hole punching through his chest and exiting his back.

Val spits out a swear none of the others have even heard, never mind understand. She sidesteps and unloads her shotgun into the attacker's chest, nine 4 gram pellets shredding the man's torso and sending him slamming back to the ground (12w).

Zurk flips the body carefully. It's a young woman clutching bundle of belongings tight in her death grip. He jabs out with a toe, but she is clearly dead.

[Brother Anselm]

"No clear fields of fire!" Exclaims Sawyer through the vox. "Sit-rep, what in Holy Terra is happening  in there?" Sawyer had a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach.

[Colonel Blood]

"This is Hood. We're coming to you. Hold positions at the Venator. Get in cover and overwatch on our approach." The Sergeant stands up and makes his way to the door. He waits for Mara to come to his shoulder and then kicks it open and advances, weapon to his shoulder, turning oaccasionally to cover their rear, until he is back with the squad.

[Padre]

Confident the limp woman before him posed no more threat, Zurk activated his comm bead after Hood's orders and gave an affirmative.  Being relatively closer to the Venator, he quickly raised his las back to his shoulder and proceeded to the vehicle

[Brother Anselm]

Obeying his sergeant's order Sawyer and his gunner go into overwatch covering the approaching squad. Sort chews his lip nervously finger poised over the firing rune of his weapon, silently praying to the Throne of terra that none of these civilians are dumb enough to charge them.

[Bobitron]

The squad contracts to the Venator, moving slowly and at maximum alert after the attack. As Val backs away, a fresh shell chambered in her Accatran M.34, the Vetnan she shot shifts on the ground, his arm reaching out toward the dead woman.

"Người vợ..." he coughs out, blood spurting from his lips as his head crashes back to the ground and he lies unmoving.

2nd Squad takes up a defensive position around the Venator, instinctively falling into locations that cover all the lanes of fire. Time stands still for a long moment as calm returns. You can hear sobbing amidst the ramshackle huts. The elder comes into view, the youth cradled in the arms of her younger companion. They move slowly into the bush without as much as a glance back.

"What's next, Sarge? Should I call it in?" Hecate says quietly from over Hood's shoulder.

[Brother Anselm]

"Oh feth, what did we do? Cort what happened? murmured Sawyer.

"Stay cool man, stay cool. Sarge say the word, these hooches burn, no evidence, no ones the wiser, our word over a bunch of nobodies." Cort was shaken by what had just occurred and it sounded in his voice.

[Colonel Blood]

Hood forces down the bile rising in his throat. Keeping his eyes on the village, he replies as calmly and steadfastly as he can: "They wanted the huts tossed. Well they're tossed. We warned them. These people are on Imperial property and I'm just about sick of Vetnans stabbing us in the back every time we try to help them. We're leaving this war zone upright and if I have to shoot a few farmers to do that, well... the Emperor can sort out who was right when I go to meet him."

He clears his throat as a lump of emotion conspires to choke him. "We'll give them a few minutes to clear out then search the place for intel and burn it. Watch for boobytraps."

[Bobitron]

Hecate only pauses a moment before nodding and reaching out to Canary, providing a very matter-of-fact report. "Canary, come back. 2nd Squad reporting. Patrol nearly done. We've roused the locals from The Huts. Three Vetnans dead, a couple other injured took off into the bush but not worth chasing down, unarmed. We'll ensure the locals are out, check for intel, then torch it. Should be back inside an hour."

"2nd Squad, Canary. Copy," Fan replies. "I'll let the LT know."

Hecate motions to the Venator.

"Sawyer's got a few gallons of promethium for the back-up generator. Should be plenty to get a good fire going."

Val and Mara move into position closer to The Huts as the smoke clears, the gunner batting away Brosnan's attention to the long but shallow cut on her arm. Bayonetta runs some prayer beads through her fingers as she stands over the body of the attacker. Mara's calm voice comes through the comms, her tone unflappable.

"Ready to check for intel at your word, Sarge."

[Colonel Blood]

Once the smoke has cleared Hood replies: "The word is given. I'm coming to back you up. Anyone who wants to stay at the Venator and help Sawyer prep the incendiaries may do so."

[Brother Anselm]

With orders given Sawyer unbuckles and eases himself from his seat in Pearl, his mind already processing the task ahead. A small part of him balks at what has happened but in war the innocent are the first to suffer. He will say a prayer for them later but for now he has things to do.
