I figured being pirates was a given... :P

RedWire has the idea with what I was asking. What kind of plot do you want to go with? Do you want to trail in Luffy's wake as RedWire suggested, or go it as if Luffy never existed or didn't do anything? Or maybe in a different age all together before or after the show's timeline?(After is trickier since we don't know everything that is still yet to happen)

Myself, I really had no inclinations one way or another with regards to the story, and, if you have something else that you already have a story for, I'd be fine doing that instead.

If I had to pick I guess I'd prefer to distance ourselves from the main story, so we're not getting railroaded/affected by the main story events.

Sorry guys I've had a very offputting last couple of days.

Anyways, its over now.

To the topic at hand; I am not 100% sure whether i want to run One Piece...as I said before, I am picky about characters for such a setting because I have a lot of respect for it and want to retain dignity and respect. I don't really want to make you guys jump through hoops just to please me with your characters, so it would be best if we went with a different setting. Also note, there are no other settings I am nearly as picky with as One Piece.

Final Fantasy would be great since the world setting doesn't have to be the same, and even if it is, I have enough to work with to build a story. My preferences are FFVI and FFVII as the most familiar, and in my opinion, most anime-like (With FFVII having Advent Children and Last Order to back that up). Hell, could go with something merely Final Fantasy themed but in it's own setting easily enough.

Fairy Tail would be another good option as I can change the era in which we play with no real consequence or difficulty and it's action style is similar enough to One Piece, but without my particular OCD need to be picky about the characters.

Something like Slayers would also be great for how open-ended that world setting is and the less than serious tone it has, while still able to have a serious plot going. (not unlike One Piece as well)

There may be a few other options not immediately springing to mind. Not to mention something non-canon is entirely possible, just requires some wordlbuilding.

I still find slayers interesting setting type to play in. Of course, final fantasy is always fun. Considering the obscene amount of time I've put into the FF XIV lately. :P

Unfortunately I've never read Slayers or Fairy Tail (though my friend keeps badgering me to do so) :(  Though I suppose I could try and binge read them.

Final Fantasy could be interesting though it seems so massively open that I'm wondering what exactly we'd do (I too have been playing obscene amounts of 14 :)  ).

What other anime would be doable/interesting?  Naruto?  Full Metal Alchemist?  Hellsing in a post Integra's death setting?

Fairy Tail more or less plays out similarly to One Piece in tone, just with wizards instead of Pirates, and a less dynamic and shifting setting, (One Piece being all about the journey and different places they visit, while Fairy Tail takes place pretty much on the one continent for the most part)

Slayers is essentially D&D the anime, and it is effing glorious. It's also one of those animes that has the copy-paste sequence where the hero does a thing and wins. Cliche, campy, but good overall.

Naruto I would mainly avoid because it has already smashed it's power ceiling and done a huge amount, that anyone we did with it would seem insignificant by comparison. Same with Bleach for that matter, though I am a fan of Bleach.

FMA I am simply not that familiar with. Same with Hellsing. I'm sure they'd be doable, but Im not familiar enough with the settings to run them.

Let's see....Power Rangers? :P RWBY. Shaman King was an old goodie. Digimon. (I wouldn't run pokemon due to cumbersome multi-pokemon teams, Digimon has one partner, so much more manageable). Rockman, Rockman X, Rockman.EXE are all fantastic settings, though I'd lean more towards the latter two over the original blue bomber. I am most familiar with EXE though.

Legend of Dragoon was a great JRPG that never got enough love.

Well, Fairy Tale (quite enjoyed what I've seen of it) sounds like a relatively easy setup "you are adventurers, here's a quest". I've not seen/read slayers, but, if it's D&D, again, sounds pretty easy.

Legend of Dragoon will be my all time favorite jrpg. I have yet to find anything comparable to it to the sheer in the terms of sheer enjoyment.

Even have a Dark action figure on my wall.

Legend of Dragoon was the first jrpg I ever completed on my own with no strategy guide. It has a special place e in my heart.

Not to mention it has a lot of interesting themes going on, and if I were to run it, it would be a great excuse for me to play through again to refresh myself on the events of the game.

Slayers is essentially an anime d&d game with ridiculous characters, and not using actual d&d classes.

Lina, Zelgados and Amelia are all spellcasters, Zelgados also having some swordsmanship as well, and Gourry is a straight up swordsman with an artefact weapon, the sword of light.

The story pretty much consists of the group traveling around in relation to whatever the overarching plot of the season is, sometimes with them none the wiser for a goodly length of time (I think it was about half way through the first season when the characters even became aware that something was up)

It's a nice mix of shinannigans and serious plot and the characters get more and more fleshed out as the seasons go on. The setting itself is pretty standard fantasy fare. Black magic, white magic, shamanistic magic, magic items, monsters disappear when defeated.

Fairy Tail also you pretty much hit on the head. The basic plot arcs generally start with a job that turns into something much more. Not always though, for example one story arc starts with a festival in the city being hosted by the guild when shit goes down. Another starts with a guild rank exam. The central focus is being part of the guild though.

Would it be a possibility for us to sort of do our own world and setting?  Or is that too much messing around?

Not at all really. I did suggest something "non-canon", which I really meant to mean, not based on anything strictly.

I haven't really seen most of the animes being talked about here, so I'm going to put my vote in for "our own thing".

The question then would be what type of setting would we like?

I am partial to fantasy and superhero style thing myself, so obviously with me being the one running, it will have to be fit into one of those shoes.

Though on that line of thought, might as well do a final fantasy thing, but not based on a specific final fantasy, just using the theme sand conventions that are well known to the series regardless of specific setting
